Tips for your tour

What to bring
Sunscreen, a cap or hat, sunglasses, swimwear, a cover-up or T-shirt, a towel and water. Bring a photo ID: many operators ask for each passenger's name and ID before departure. A waterproof phone pouch and a bag for trash also help. Food, drinks and ice: check with the operator beforehand what's included and what you can bring.
How to avoid seasickness
Eat something light before boarding and go easy on alcohol. On board, stay at the back or middle of the boat, close to the waterline, and look at the horizon. If you tend to get seasick, ask a doctor or pharmacist about medication and take it before boarding, not after. The North and South bays are sheltered and usually calmer than the open sea.
Best times
Morning departures usually have calmer seas and less wind. In the late afternoon, the sunset over Baía Norte is one of the most beautiful on the island. Arrive at the boarding point 15 to 30 minutes early. In high season (December to February and Carnival), slots fill up fast: contact the operator in advance.
Wind, tides and weather
In Florianópolis, the south wind and cold fronts make the sea rough and can cancel or change the route. Tides here vary little, but they can affect access to some beaches and shallow spots; the skipper adjusts the course. The operator decides whether it's safe to go out. Agree beforehand on how rescheduling works in bad weather.
Safety on board
Life jackets are mandatory and must fit each person; for babies and small children, check with the operator whether child-size life jackets are available. Always follow the skipper's instructions, especially when getting in and out of the water and during stops.
Jet ski
To drive a jet ski in Brazil you need the Brazilian Navy's personal watercraft license (Motonauta). Without a license, you ride as a passenger with a licensed driver. Fuel may change the price: check with the operator before heading out.
